Michael Marin joined the firm as Counsel in January 2024. In this role, he provides occasional strategic advice to the firm’s lawyers on matters involving administrative law, civil liability, and corporate law. With over a decade of experience in these areas as practitioner, adjudicator, and law professor in multiple jurisdictions, Michael helps the firm ensure that its clients are well-served when their legal issues extend beyond the criminal law context.
Michael has been a law professor for 12 years in both New Brunswick and Ontario. His teaching and research focus on administrative law, corporate law, torts, and contracts. Michael has extensive experience as an administrative decision-maker, having served as a Vice-Chairperson of the New Brunswick Workers’ Compensation Appeals Tribunal (WCAT) between 2018 and 2021. He is currently a Vice-Chairperson of the New Brunswick Labour and Employment Board (LEB). With his combination of academic and practical experience in administrative law, Michael has in-depth knowledge of the law that governs quasi-criminal, professional discipline, and other regulatory matters.
Before entering academia, Michael practiced corporate and commercial litigation in New York City, labour and employment law in Ottawa, and clerked at the Supreme Court of Canada. He holds a Master of Laws (LL.M.) from the University of Cambridge, where he studied as a Gates Scholar, and a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from the University of Ottawa. He is a member of the Law Society of New Brunswick, the Law Society of Ontario, and the Bar of New York. In 2022, he was appointed a King’s Counsel for New Brunswick.
As Counsel to the firm, Michael does not represent clients directly. He also does not practice labour and employment law with the firm.
